Summary
The Commissioner for Administration and the Protection of Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Cyprus was established by Law 3(I)/1991 and codified in Law N.138(I)/2002. Appointed by the Council of Ministers for a 6-year term (once renewable), the Commissioner investigates maladministration and human rights violations by public bodies. The office has accumulated additional roles as national anti-discrimination body, OPCAT National Preventive Mechanism, and data protection oversight body. IOI member.
