Summary

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission is established under s.45 of the 2013 Constitution and the Human Rights Commission Decree 2009. It replaced the earlier Human Rights Commission Act 1999. The Commission receives complaints from individuals alleging human rights violations or discrimination, including complaints against the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Corrections Service. It may investigate, mediate, and refer matters to the Director of Public Prosecutions. Its recommendations on discipline are advisory only. The Commission is composed of civilian members appointed by the President on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission, and reports annually to Parliament.
