The Maharashtra Lokayukta is the oldest state Lokayukta institution in India, established under the Maharashtra Lokayukta and Upa-Lokayuktas Act, 1971 (operational 1972). Maharashtra was the first Indian state to formally establish the Lokayukta institution. Currently headed by Justice Vidyasagar Murleedharan Kanade.
