Strafvollzugskommission (Prison Supervision Commission)
Strafvollzugskommission
Summary
The Strafvollzugskommission is a five-member inspection commission established under the Strafvollzugsgesetz (StVG, LGBl. 2007 Nr. 295, §§ 78–83). Members are appointed by the government for four-year terms; each year the commission elects its chairperson and deputy from among themselves. The commission oversees the lawful and humane execution of custodial sentences at the Landesgefängnis in Vaduz, the only prison in Liechtenstein. It also serves simultaneously as Liechtenstein's OPCAT National Preventive Mechanism, conducting at least four unannounced visits per year with full access to all areas of the facility and private interviews with prisoners. It may issue recommendations to the government but has no disciplinary authority over prison staff. Annual reports are published. Statute is silent on civilian composition requirements.
