Justitiekanslern
JK
Summary
Justitiekanslern (Chancellor of Justice, JK) is the government's highest ombudsman, established under Lag (1975:1339) om justitiekanslerns tillsyn. The JK oversees all state agencies including the Police Authority and Kriminalvården for compliance with law. The JK may act as special prosecutor for official misconduct by senior officials and may refer officials for dismissal or suspension to the competent authority, but cannot itself impose discipline. Appointed by the government without a fixed term, the JK is constitutionally independent in function but executive-appointed and executive-budget funded. Records access is full under statute; reports are published without prior government review.
