Summary
The Uganda Prisons Authority is established under the Prisons Act 2006 (Act 17/2006). It consists of the Attorney General or representative, Commissioner General, Deputy Commissioner General, Permanent Secretary (Public Service), a senior HR officer, and two persons appointed by the President for two-year renewable terms. The two presidential appointees are the only civilian members (minority). The Authority advises on senior appointments, makes appointments for assistant superintendent rank and above, determines terms of service, and hears appeals. The Permanent Secretary of Internal Affairs serves as secretary.
