Summary

Established by F.S. §944.31, the FDC Office of Inspector General conducts prison inspections, internal affairs investigations, and management reviews of all state correctional institutions and contractor-operated facilities. OIG investigators may enter any facility, interview prisoners and staff privately, and review operational records. The Secretary of Corrections may designate OIG personnel as law enforcement officers to conduct criminal investigations arising within DOC jurisdiction, including at contracted facilities. Discipline findings are referred to the Secretary (advisory posture). The office operates under the Secretary of Corrections and is not structurally independent.
