Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council
Georgia POST Council
Summary
The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council, established under O.C.G.A. §35-8, certifies, trains, and decertifies all peace officers in Georgia. The 22-member council (all LE or LE-adjacent) holds binding disciplinary authority including reprimand, suspension, restriction, and revocation of certification. Council investigators have full statutory access to any documents deemed relevant to officer fitness and may issue subpoenas enforceable in superior court. The council is administratively assigned to the Department of Public Safety and reports annually to the Governor and General Assembly. It does not independently investigate uses of force but refers findings to prosecutors or agencies.
