Indiana State Police Board

ISP Board

Summary

The Indiana State Police Board is a six-member body established under IC 10-11-2-5. All six members are civilians appointed by the Governor to four-year terms, with one member from each of six geographic regions of the state; no more than three may belong to the same political party. The Board functions as the governing authority of the ISP and conducts binding public discipline hearings (IC 10-11-2-15) on demand from officers who are discharged, demoted, or suspended by the ISP Superintendent. After hearing evidence, the Board makes findings of fact; if misconduct is found, it may impose a more severe penalty than the superintendent. Decisions are final unless judicially reviewed under IC 4-21.5-5. The Board has full access to departmental records in the course of hearings but no statutory subpoena power for external parties.
