Summary

The OIG of the Nebraska Correctional System was established in 2015 (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 50-1902 et seq., transferred from Ch. 47 to Ch. 50 by LB298, 2025) as a subdivision of the Legislature's Division of Legislative Oversight. The Inspector General is appointed by the Director of Legislative Oversight with approval from three committee chairs, serves a five-year renewable term, and may be removed only with a two-thirds vote of the Legislative Oversight Committee. The office independently investigates deaths, serious injuries, misconduct, and systemic issues in the state correctional system and parole supervision; it has full statutory access to departmental records and may request committee-issued subpoenas and compel testimony. Annual reports are due September 15.
