Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission
Wyoming POST Commission
Summary
The Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission was established in 1971 under W.S. §§9-1-701 to 9-1-708. It certifies and decertifies peace officers, dispatchers, and corrections officers statewide. The Commission is composed of the attorney general ex officio and six members appointed by the governor for three-year terms, including representatives of municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies, a training specialist, and two at-large members. Statute does not require civilian membership. The Commission may grant, suspend, or revoke certification for substantial noncompliance with the act or its rules, following contested-case procedures under the Wyoming Administrative Procedure Act. Automatic revocation occurs upon felony conviction. HB0031 (2024) amended Wyoming's Public Records Act to require that portions of personnel files specifically related to a complaint be disclosed to POST, closing a gap that had prevented investigations.
