Office of the Ombudsman of Belize
Ombudsman
Summary
Established under the Ombudsman Act (Cap. 5), the Ombudsman investigates complaints of maladministration, abuse of power, and corruption against all government departments, explicitly including the Belize Police Department and Belize Central Prison. The Ombudsman holds the same powers as a Supreme Court judge to compel attendance and examine witnesses and may enter any premises to gather documentation. However, the office can only recommend redress; it has no binding discipline or enforcement authority. Noncompliance by investigated agencies severely limits effectiveness. The Ombudsman is appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of both Houses of the National Assembly for a three-year term.
