Defensoría del Pueblo
Summary
The Defensoría del Pueblo is Colombia's national human rights ombudsman, established under Article 282 of the 1991 Constitución Política and governed by Ley 24 of 1992. The Defensor del Pueblo is elected by the Chamber of Representatives for a four-year term from a list of three candidates proposed by the President of the Republic; the appointment_method reflects this executive-nomination plus legislative-election structure. The Defensoría investigates complaints against public authorities for human rights violations, provides legal representation to vulnerable populations, and monitors compliance with human rights standards. It forms part of the Public Ministry alongside the Procuraduría General. Annual reports are submitted to Congress and published. As of 2024, Iris Marín Ortiz serves as Defensora for the period 2024-2028, the first woman to hold the position.
