Summary
The Defensor del Pueblo of the Dominican Republic is constitutionally established under Articles 191-194 of the Constitución Política (2015) and governed by Ley Orgánica No. 19-01 of 2 February 2001. The Defensor del Pueblo is elected by the National Congress (joint session of Senate and Chamber of Deputies) for a six-year non-renewable term. The Office investigates complaints of violations of fundamental rights and maladministration by public administration entities, issuing non-binding recommendations. Annual reports are submitted to the National Congress and published. The Defensor del Pueblo cannot review judicial or congressional acts.
