Summary
The Office of the Public Defender of Jamaica was established under the Public Defender (Interim) Act 1999 (as amended) as the parliamentary ombudsman for the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms. The Public Defender is appointed by the Governor-General acting on the advice of the Prime Minister after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition (bipartisan), for a six-year term. The Office investigates complaints of violations of constitutional rights and maladministration by government agencies, issuing non-binding recommendations. Annual reports are submitted to Parliament. The "(Interim)" designation reflects pending constitutional entrenchment under the Charter of Rights.
