Summary
The Prosecutor General's Office exercises supreme supervisory authority on behalf of the state over all law enforcement investigations in Kazakhstan. Its requirements are mandatory for all state bodies including police and correctional institutions. It supervises the legality of operational-search activities, preliminary investigations, and administrative proceedings. The PGO can initiate criminal cases, review complaints of torture and excessive force, and issue binding instructions to investigators. It is directly subordinate to the President and headed by the Prosecutor General appointed by the President.
