Summary
The Iekšējās drošības birojs (Internal Security Bureau) is Latvia's dedicated criminal-investigation body for misconduct by MoI-system officers and Prison Administration personnel. Established by the Iekšējās drošības biroja likums (Saeima, 17 Dec 2014; in force 1 Nov 2015), it conducts operational activities and pre-trial criminal investigations fully independently of the agencies under review. As a pre-trial investigative authority under the Kriminālprocesa likums it has full evidence access including personnel files, operational records, and physical evidence. The Director is appointed by the Minister of Interior following Cabinet of Ministers approval, for a 5-year term. Lawfulness of its operations is monitored by the Prosecutor's Office.

Jurisdiction scope
Investigates criminal offences committed by officials of all Ministry of Interior institutions (State Police, Border Guard, Municipal Police, Port Police) and Prison Administration personnel with special service ranks; conducts operational activities and pre-trial criminal investigations.
