Summary

The Tiesībsargs (Ombudsman of Latvia) was established by the Tiesībsarga likums of 6 April 2006, which replaced the earlier National Human Rights Office. The Tiesībsargs is elected by the Saeima for a 5-year term and investigates human rights violations and maladministration. Serves also as National Human Rights Institution (A status) and OPCAT National Preventive Mechanism. IOI member.
