Law Enforcement Oversight

Who watches the police?

Minnesota LE oversight is anchored by three state-level bodies. The Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST; MS §626.841 et seq.) holds binding decertification authority over all licensed peace officers statewide, with full statutory access to BWC footage and personnel records (MS §626.8457), though it does not independently investigate use-of-force incidents. The BCA Force Investigations Unit (FIU; MS §299C.80, est. 2021) independently investigates all officer-involved deaths statewide but lacks explicit subpoena power and has no discipline authority. The Office of the Ombuds for Corrections (MS §241.90–241.95) is a governor-appointed independent body covering state prisons and 150+ local jails with subpoena power and full records access, but only advisory recommendations over DOC. Local civilian review boards exist under MS §626.89 but may only recommend—not impose—discipline.
