Summary

The Independent Commission Against Corruption was established by the ICAC Act 1988 as a standing royal commission with broad coercive powers to investigate corrupt conduct by NSW public officials. The Chief Commissioner is appointed by the Governor on the advice of the executive to a 5-year non-renewable term. ICAC can hold public and private hearings, compel production of documents, and examine witnesses under oath. It reports to Parliament and its reports are made public. The Inspector of the ICAC provides independent oversight of the Commission's operations.
