Contraloría General del Estado
CGE
Summary
The Contraloría General del Estado is Bolivia's Supreme Audit Institution, constitutionally established under Articles 213-217 of the 2009 Constitución Política del Estado and governed principally by Ley N° 1178 (SAFCO, 1990). The Contralor or Contralora General is designated by two-thirds of the votes of the members present in the Asamblea Legislativa Plurinacional following a public competition process evaluating professional capacity and merits; the term is six years with no possibility of reappointment. The institution controls and audits the administration of public resources across all levels of the Bolivian state. It has full access to all documents and information necessary for its audits. Annual reports are published and presented to the Asamblea. Notably, as of early 2026 the post of Contralor General has been held by an acting official for several years because the Asamblea has been unable to reach the required supermajority to elect a permanent head.
