Summary

The Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner is an Officer of Parliament appointed by the Governor in Council after consultation with the leader of every recognized party in both Houses, to a single non-renewable 7-year term. The CIEC administers the Conflict of Interest Act for public office holders and the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons. It has powers to examine witnesses and compel production of documents during investigations. Reports on investigations are tabled in Parliament and made public.
