53/100

Summary

The Συνήγορος του Πολίτη (Greek Ombudsman, literally "Citizens' Advocate") was established by Law 2477/1997 and began operations in October 1998; its organisation is currently governed by Law 3094/2003. The Ombudsman is selected by the Cabinet after prior consultation with the Conference of Parliament Chairmen (by unanimity or a four-fifths supermajority of its members) and is appointed by presidential decree for a five-year term. The Ombudsman investigates complaints against public bodies, may request any documents or information, conduct on-site inspections, and interview witnesses; it issues findings and recommendations but cannot overturn administrative acts. By virtue of Articles 56-57 of Law 4443/2016, the Greek Ombudsman also serves as the National Mechanism for investigating police misconduct. Annual reports are submitted to Parliament.
