Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau
PCCB
Summary
The Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) is Tanzania's primary anti-corruption law enforcement and investigation agency, established under the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Act No. 11 of 2007. The Director-General is appointed by the President and serves at executive discretion; changes in Director-General have frequently followed changes in presidential administration. The PCCB investigates and prosecutes corruption, bribery, money laundering, and related offences; it has powers of arrest, search and seizure, and can compel testimony under the Act. The Bureau also conducts public awareness and prevention programmes. Independence concerns have been raised by civil society given the at-will appointment and removal structure.
